Silver Siren: A Myth-Inspired Speaker by Jiaxing Guo

Unveiling the Silver Siren, a Speaker Design Inspired by Greek Mythology

Delving into the world of design and innovation, Jiaxing Guo presents the Silver Siren, a speaker design inspired by the enchanting and dangerous Sirens of Greek mythology. This award-winning design combines form, function, and mythology to create a unique audio experience.

Jiaxing Guo's inspiration for the Silver Siren speaker came from the mythological Sirens of the sea. In Greek mythology, Sirens were captivating creatures who lured sailors to their doom with their mesmerizing music and singing voices. They were often portrayed as beautiful women, seductive not only in voice but also in form. Drawing from this imagery, Jiaxing Guo sought to create a speaker that was both beautiful and mysterious, with a fluid, organic form reminiscent of a Siren leaning on a rock, singing and waiting for sailors. The design also captures the color and movement of ocean waves, adding another layer of depth to the concept.

The Silver Siren stands out for its unique properties. It embodies the seductive and dangerous nature of the Sirens, presenting a speaker with a fluid, organic form that is both enchanting and mysterious. The design process involved designing the form and speaker/amplifier enclosures in Rhinoceros, laser cutting MDF to make a section model, gluing pieces together, sanding it smooth, and then painting with primer, automotive paints, and clearcoat before assembling all the parts.

With dimensions of 266 mm in width, 268 mm in depth, and 728 mm in height, the Silver Siren is a substantial piece of consumer electronics. It features a control panel on the side, allowing users to connect their audio devices via Bluetooth or an AUX cable. The speaker was designed and produced in Los Angeles between January and August 2019.

Creating the Silver Siren was not without its challenges. Jiaxing Guo faced difficulties in crafting the organic form of the speaker and arranging the internal electronics. To overcome these, a section model was made using layers of MDF board to lower costs and simplify the creation of the inner structure. For the internal electronics, a slide was created to easily remove all parts from the main body if any components broke.

The Silver Siren is more than just a speaker; it's a piece of art inspired by mythology. It was awarded Silver in the A' Audio and Sound Equipment Design Award in 2021, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase a high level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
